Artificial intelligence (AI) is slowly creeping in almost every aspect of our daily lives, and soon, even traffic lights will be controlled by it.

Putrajaya Corporation recently announced that the federal territory is transitioning its traffic light system to an AI-based one.

“Putrajaya Corporation is currently upgrading Putrajaya’s traffic management system to technology based on AI for smoother traffic,” it said in a Faebook post.

Phase one of the upgrading works is said to be completed, with Proof of Concept testing having been successfully carried out at Lebuh Wawasan, Persiaran Timur to Jalan P14 and Persiaran Perdana.

The project is currently in phase two, which is a transition phase involving the replacment of equipment at the intersection. Putrajaya Corporation noted that the system will take some time to integrate the green wave integration process.

AI integration is expected to be complete in the third and final phase, which upgrades 140 traffic lights in Putrajaya to allow smoother and more efficient traffic flow.

How will the AI traffic lights work?

Based on Putrajaya Corporation’s Facebook post, the AI traffic lights will have three main functions.

Video Analysis (VA) cameras will detect the number and types of vehicles on the road, as well as measure the distance of the waiting queue accurately.

Meanwhile, a “Green Wave” coordination function will adjust green light time based on traffic, in addition to predicting traffic patterns.

The system will also standardise the display of traffic lights to create non-stop traffic flow in Putrajaya. With this step, traffic flow is expected to be smoother, thus reducing road congestion.
