WhatsApp is starting to test something iPhone users have wanted for years — the ability to run more than one account on the same device.
What the Feature Actually Does
Beta testers on the latest iOS TestFlight release (version 25.34.10.72) are seeing a new “Account List” section inside WhatsApp settings. This is where you can add a second account, switch between accounts or log out of one — all without resetting the app.
WhatsApp currently allows up to two accounts per device. Each account can be:
- A brand-new account tied to a fresh phone number
- An account you already use on another device
- A companion account that syncs via QR code
This means people who previously relied on WhatsApp Business just to carry a second phone number no longer need the workaround.
Each Account Works Independently
One of the highlights is that accounts don’t mix. Every account keeps its own chat history, notification settings, privacy preferences, and media download rules. Even backup schedules are kept separate so that one account doesn’t delay or interrupt the other.
If a message arrives on an account that isn’t currently active, WhatsApp still pushes a notification that clearly states which account received it, so you won’t reply to your boss thinking it was your friend.
Switching Accounts Is Fast
Once you’ve added a second account, switching between them is intentionally simple.
You can:
- Switch via the Account List menu
- Long-press the Settings tab to bring up the switcher
- Double-tap the Settings tab to jump straight to the next account
WhatsApp loads the new account instantly — no logging out, no reauthentication, and no app restart.
There’s also a small toast notification confirming when you’ve switched, so you don’t accidentally reply from the wrong profile.
Security Is Built In
If you use App Lock (Face ID, Touch ID or phone passcode), it still works with multiple accounts.
Switch to an account with App Lock turned on and WhatsApp will ask for authentication before displaying chats. This gives each account its own level of privacy, even if someone else is holding your phone.
Who Gets It Now?
As always, access is limited. The feature is currently rolling out only to selected iOS beta testers and may gradually appear for others as WhatsApp expands the test. Some users on the latest stable App Store release might see early access through experimental testing, so keeping the app updated improves your chances.
