Maybank has tightened its digital banking security measures, making the MAE mobile app the only way for most customers to reset their Maybank2u passwords.

The change, effective from 18 September 2025, applies to individual and sole proprietorship account holders. Business users on M2UBiz and M2E platforms are not affected.

According to the bank, the update is meant to improve security by tying the reset process to Secure2u, Maybank’s in-app two-factor authentication system. This integration ensures that both password changes and identity checks happen within the same secure platform, reducing the risk of unauthorised access.

How to Reset Passwords

Customers who remember their login details can change their passwords directly in the MAE app by following these steps:

  1. Log in to the MAE app.
  2. Go to Settings.
  3. Tap Security and select Change Password.
  4. Enter the current password, then choose a new one.
  5. Authenticate the change using Secure2u.

For those who have forgotten their credentials, the process starts from the MAE login screen by tapping Forgot Password or Forgot Login Details. Users must then:

  • Verify their identity with Secure2u and the method used during their original Maybank2u registration (e.g. debit or credit card, MAE wallet number, or access number).
  • Scan their NRIC or passport.
  • Take a self-portrait for biometric verification.

Once verified, a new password can be set. Secure2u authentication is required again to complete the reset.

Restrictions and Lockouts

Password resets are limited to once every 24 hours. Users who fail the verification process three times in a row will be locked out of the reset function for 24 hours.

Lost Device Procedure

If a customer loses access to their Secure2u-registered device, they must obtain a temporary M2U PIN from a Maybank ATM or branch. This PIN is valid for 48 hours and allows the customer to re-enrol Secure2u on a new device.

Maybank’s update is part of a wider industry trend in Malaysia to reduce fraud risks by tightening online banking access. Customers are advised to ensure they have the latest version of the MAE app installed and that their Secure2u registration is up to date.
