Malaysia’s AI developers are about to get a major computational head start — without spending a single ringgit on hardware. AMD has pledged 100,000 hours of free GPU cloud computing to local researchers and developers, in a move aimed at speeding up AI model training and making large-scale data processing far more accessible.
The announcement came from Keith Strier, AMD’s senior vice-president for Global AI Markets, at the Asean AI Malaysia Summit 2025, which was officiated by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. This marks AMD’s first “sovereign AI” partnership, formed with Malaysia’s National AI Office.
Cloud-based GPUs, unlike their physical counterparts, let users crunch massive datasets and perform complex AI calculations remotely — no bulky hardware, no local energy drain. For fields like machine learning, that means faster experiments, bigger models, and fewer infrastructure limits holding projects back.
“This world-class resource will accelerate local innovation, improve AI readiness and strengthen Malaysia’s leadership in AI,” Strier said, framing the partnership as a way to both empower local talent and give Malaysia a sharper competitive edge in the AI race.
The summit also saw the launch of the AI Ready Asean platform by the Asean Foundation, with backing from Google.org. Designed to spread AI literacy across the region, the initiative will use a train-the-trainer model to upskill 800,000 community leaders — with 400,000 Malaysians set to benefit directly.
Between AMD’s processing firepower and new regional training programmes, Malaysia’s AI scene could be in for a growth spurt.
