Malaysia-born executive Lip-Bu Tan, who assumed the helm at Intel in March 2025, now finds himself at a critical crossroads. US President Donald Trump publicly demanded his immediate resignation, branding him “highly conflicted” over extensive business ties to Chinese firms—including some allegedly linked to the People’s Liberation Army.
The uproar follows revelations that Tan, through his venture firm Walden International and associated entities, invested RM938 million (US $200 million) in hundreds of Chinese advanced-manufacturing and chip companies between 2012 and 2024—some of which are tied to China’s military or sanctioned entities. Meanwhile, Cadence Design Systems, where Tan served as CEO from 2009 to 2021, pleaded guilty to export violations related to sales to a Chinese military university, resulting in a settlement exceeding RM655 million (US $140 million).
Intel’s leadership is under strain—not least because Tan must now shift focus from his turnaround agenda to a political defence. Analysts warn that Trump’s public attack may derail efforts to cut costs and restore competitiveness against AI chip juggernauts like Nvidia and TSMC. Yet Tan and Intel maintain they are “deeply committed to advancing U.S. national and economic security”, aligning with the administration’s America-First priorities.
With Intel’s stock dipping by more than 3% following the scandal and executives preparing for Tan’s scheduled White House visit, the company faces its most intense political scrutiny in years. Intel’s fate now hinges on whether Tan can convince U.S. officials—and a wary public—that he is the right person to lead Silicon Valley’s old guard back to prominence.
