CapCut has updated its Terms of Service as of 12 June 2025. The changes may seem small at first, but they carry big consequences for anyone editing content on the app.

Under the new rules, creators still own the copyright to their videos, but CapCut and its partners now get a permanent, worldwide, royalty-free licence to use anything made with the app. That includes your video clips, music overlays, and even drafts you never post.

They can use your content in ads, publish it on third-party platforms, remix it, sell it, or modify it. They do not need to tell you, pay you, or give you credit. The licence is irrevocable, which means you cannot take it back. It applies to every piece of media you edit on CapCut, whether public or private.

You also waive several personal rights. CapCut can use your name, image, and likeness to identify you as the creator. You have no say in how they present your work, even if you disagree with the message or context.

Other key issues include:

  • Account suspension at any time
CapCut can delete your account for any reason without warning. If that happens, you lose access to your content and any paid features.
  • Strict refund conditions
You only qualify for a refund within 14 days if you haven’t used any premium tools. Just previewing a feature might disqualify you.
  • No control over third-party risks
If something goes wrong because of external tools or AI features used in CapCut, the liability is yours, not theirs.
  • Legal risks fall on you
If someone sues CapCut over your content, you may be responsible for their legal fees. This clause puts full legal pressure on the user.
  • Arbitration only
You cannot file class-action lawsuits. All legal disputes must be handled through arbitration, either in Singapore or California, depending on your location.
  • No guaranteed storage
CapCut offers cloud storage but takes no responsibility for lost data. If your work disappears, there is no backup promise.
  • They can change the rules anytime
CapCut reserves the right to update plans, pricing, or features without notice. Continuing to use the app means you’ve accepted those changes automatically.

CapCut may still be free to download and use, but these terms come at a cost. If you want to keep full control over your videos, the safest move is to edit and export your work, then publish and monetise it outside of CapCut. If you stay within the app, treat every edit as something they might one day reuse or resell without asking.
