Google is officially retiring its physical Play Store gift cards in Malaysia, with the final date of sale set for 15 June 2025. After that, it’s game over for topping up your Play Store balance with a good old scratch card from the corner 7-Eleven.
These prepaid cards, introduced in 2018, were a convenient workaround for users without access to credit or debit cards. They offered a sense of spending control—especially among younger users or those wary of linking bank details to their accounts. Available in RM50, RM100 and RM200 denominations, the cards could be used to purchase everything from apps and games to movies and books.
But the option won’t last much longer. Google has confirmed that cards must be redeemed by 15 June, and any remaining balance should be spent before 31 January 2026. Any funds left after that will quietly expire.
While Google didn’t offer a reason for discontinuing the programme, the shift reflects an obvious trend: the growing dominance of digital payment methods. With expanded support now for FPX, credit and debit cards, carrier billing, and local ewallets such as Touch ’n Go, Boost, and ShopeePay, prepaid cards have arguably outlived their use case.
It’s also worth noting that digital gift card scams have become increasingly common—so this may be a subtle way for Google to reduce vulnerability in its payment ecosystem, without spelling it out.
As for promotional Google Play balance, that will continue as usual, subject to each promo’s expiry terms.
If you’ve still got any cards lying around, consider this your cue to dig them out and spend the balance.
