Starlink has recently introduced a lower-cost satellite internet plan in Malaysia, but there’s a clear trade-off. The new “Residential Lite” option clocks in at RM129 per month, down from the standard RM220. While it offers uncapped data, users can expect slower speeds and lower priority on the network during peak times.
Performance is predictably trimmed. Download speeds hover between 45 to 130Mbps, a noticeable dip from the typical 109 to 276Mbps on the standard plan. Uploads range from 10 to 20Mbps, and when demand spikes, Lite users will find themselves at the back of the queue. Despite this, there’s still no throttling or hard data limits—just softer performance overall.
To get started, users still need to purchase the Starlink Standard V4 kit, priced at RM1,600. The new hardware includes a larger dish and an upgraded Gen 3 Wi-Fi Router, though it lacks the auto-orienting feature from earlier models. Kits are available both directly from Starlink and through major electronics retailers in Malaysia.
In short, Starlink is inching towards accessibility with this new plan, but don’t expect full-throttle space internet at a Lite price. For users in underserved areas, though, it’s still a potential game-changer if you can live with the compromises.
