Instagram has announced a significant update to its profile grid layout, transitioning from the traditional square format to vertical rectangles. This change, set to roll out over the weekend, aims to better accommodate the predominance of vertically oriented photos and videos on the platform.

Head of Instagram, Adam Mosseri, posted an Instagram story stating that Instagram is testing a vertical grid instead of squares. He said, “The vast majority of what is uploaded to Instagram today is vertical. It’s either 4 by 3 in a photo or 9 by 16 in a video, and cropping it down to square is pretty brutal. So, I’m hoping we can figure out a way to manage this transition.”

He acknowledged the platform’s square photo heritage but added that cropping such content to fit a square frame is “a bummer.”

While he anticipates some initial discomfort among users, Mosseri believes that, over time, people will appreciate that their photos and videos are displayed more fully without aggressive cropping.

The shift to a rectangular grid has elicited mixed reactions from users. Some have expressed frustration, particularly those who meticulously curated their profiles based on the square layout.

This update follows Instagram’s recent extension of carousel posts, allowing users to share up to 20 photos or videos in a single post, doubling the previous limit. This enhancement facilitates more extensive storytelling and aligns Instagram more closely with platforms like TikTok, which permits up to 35 photos per post.

As Instagram continues to evolve, users are encouraged to adapt to these changes and explore new ways to showcase their content within the updated layout.
