Starting from 11 September 2024, Grab Malaysia will begin charging a 1% fee for credit card reloads to its GrabPay Wallet. This move aligns with similar measures taken by other eWallet providers in Malaysia, reflecting an industry-wide trend to pass on processing costs to consumers.

For those who regularly reload their GrabPay Wallet using a credit card, this change will mean that topping up RM100 will now cost RM101. However, not all credit cards will be subject to this fee. Users of the Maybank Grab Mastercard Credit Card, Grab’s co-branded card, will continue to enjoy fee-free reloads, at least for the time being.

If you’d prefer to avoid the 1% fee, Grab offers several alternative methods for topping up your eWallet. Reloads made via debit cards and bank transfers will remain free of charge. Additionally, users can take advantage of the fee waiver by using the Maybank Grab Mastercard.

The decision to introduce this fee comes as no surprise, given the growing trend among eWallet providers in Malaysia. Earlier this year, Touch ‘n Go eWallet also began charging a 1% fee on credit card reloads, citing the high costs associated with processing these transactions.

BigPay, another major player in the digital wallet space, has similarly implemented a 1% fee for reloads made with locally issued credit cards and a 3% fee for those using foreign-issued cards since 2022.

In recent years, eWallet providers have shouldered the transaction fees incurred when users reload via credit card. However, this practice has become unsustainable, particularly as some users exploit the system to cash out credit card balances without incurring cash advance charges.

By introducing the 1% fee, Grab aims to offset these processing costs and discourage misuse of its platform.

Simple Steps to Keep Reloading for Free

To avoid the 1% fee on credit card reloads, you can switch to alternative methods that remain free of charge. GrabPay users can continue topping up their wallets using debit cards or bank transfers without incurring any fees. Additionally, if you have a Maybank Grab Mastercard Credit Card, you can still enjoy fee-free reloads for the time being.

To make the switch, follow these steps:

  • Add a debit card or link a bank account for future reloads.
  • Open the Grab app and go to the Top-Up settings.
  • Remove your existing credit card details.

This adjustment is part of a broader industry trend that sees eWallet providers balancing the need to offer convenience while managing operational costs effectively.

As digital payments continue to evolve, consumers will likely see more of these shifts as providers seek to maintain sustainability in an increasingly competitive market.
