Tesla, the renowned electric vehicle (EV) manufacturer from the United States, has abandoned its plans to establish factories in Southeast Asia, including Malaysia. This decision marks a significant shift in Tesla’s investment strategy for the region.
According to a report by The Nation, citing a Thai government source, Tesla has scrapped its plans to set up an EV factory in Southeast Asia. Thailand, Malaysia, and Indonesia were among the likely locations considered for the factory.
The report reveals that Tesla is currently focusing only on developing charging stations, with factory plans suspended globally.

The source explained that the decision is part of a broader withdrawal of Tesla’s investment across Asia and beyond, with the exception of their ongoing projects in China, America, and Germany.
The report also reveals that the Tesla executive team responsible for spearheading the company’s expansion into Southeast Asia last year has been disbanded.
This development further underscores Tesla’s strategic pivot away from establishing a manufacturing presence in the region.
However, a source from Malaysia’s Ministry of Investment, Trade, and Industry (MITI) has dismissed the report, noting that it was not an official statement from Tesla and lacked confirmation from the company itself.
