A couple of days ago, we reported news where Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil announced the government’s intention to create its own social media app for Malaysians.

He said they wanted to do this because social media companies are prioritising profit over user welfare.

However, it seems the government is no longer interested in doing so. Fahmi said that developing a social media app is expensive and currently, not a priority for the government, according to NST.

He mentioned that the government’s attention was primarily on urgent matters, such as the condition of rundown schools and clinics.

Fahmi added that private companies are welcome to create a social media app, and they can get assistance from MOSTI (Science, Technology and Innovation Ministry) or MDEC (Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation) if they want to do so.

To develop a new social media app, it would cost around USD30,000 (~RM134,730) to USD250,000 (~RM1.12 million) depending on the complexity.
