The Communications Ministry has unveiled the Rahmah Student Prepaid Package, a new initiative aimed at providing affordable internet access to students.
The package will be priced at no more than RM30 with a minimum of 30GB of data, valid for 180 days, according to The Star.
Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil highlighted that the package is specifically designed for secondary school leavers continuing their studies at selected Public Institutions of Higher Education (IPTA) and Public Skills Training Institutions (ILKA).
Fahmi emphasised that the Rahmah Student Prepaid Package will be available starting 16 August 2024 through five major telecommunications service providers (telcos): CelcomDigi, Maxis, U Mobile, TM Tech (Telekom Malaysia), and YTL Communications (Yes).
He noted that this package is an extension of the Rahmah Mobile Internet Package (prepaid) introduced last year, reflecting the Ministry’s ongoing efforts to support students in managing the rising cost of living.
Fahmi mentioned that further details about the Rahmah Student Prepaid Package will be provided by the telcos in due course.
Initially, the package will be available to students at IPTA and ILKA institutions. The Ministry plans to discuss with the telcos the possibility of expanding the package’s availability to a broader student base.
Fahmi clarified that the government is not subsidising the package; instead, the telcos have generously agreed to offer reduced rates for students.
The complete list of selected IPTA and ILKA will be notified through the Communications Ministry’s website.
