The social media platform X now formally allows people to show consensual adult content, provided it is clearly labelled.

This move officially enforces a policy that existed when the platform was known as Twitter, before the tech billionaire Elon Musk purchased it in 2022, according to AP.

According to X’s policy which was posted on its website, the company stated that users:

Should be able to create, distribute, and consume material related to sexual themes as long as it is consensually produced and distributed. Sexual expression, whether visual or written, can be a legitimate form of artistic expression.

Adult content was permitted under the pre-Musk Twitter, though no official policy was in place. X restricts adult content for children and adult users who choose not to see it.

X stated that they prohibit content promoting exploitation, nonconsent, objectification, sexualisation, or harm to minors, and obscene behaviours.

It added that it does not allow sharing adult content in “highly visible” places such as users’ profile photos or banners.

X’s policy contrasts with other social media platforms, such as Meta’s Instagram and Facebook — as well as TikTok and Google’s YouTube, where posting of adult content is not allowed.
