The Dewan Rakyat approved the Cyber Security Bill 2024 on 27 March, aiming to bolster the nation’s cybersecurity by enforcing specific measures, standards, and processes to manage cyber threats.
Digital Minister Gobind Singh Deo outlined 11 sectors as Critical National Information Infrastructure, including government, banking, transportation, defence, healthcare, and others, according to Bernama.
Sectors not designated as critical aren’t required to report incidents to the Chief Executive of the National Cyber Security Agency (NACSA) and aren’t subject to NACSA investigations.
The bill also establishes the National Cyber Security Committee, outlines the Chief Executive’s duties, appoints heads of critical sectors, and designates critical entities.
He further emphasised that the Cyber Security Bill 2024 has the potential to assist the government in guaranteeing the effectiveness and efficiency of critical national information infrastructure operations in handling cybersecurity incidents.
Moreover, he underscored that this measure would fortify national security without compromise, concurrently promoting robust and sustainable economic development by fostering an atmosphere conducive to instilling confidence and drawing foreign investment into the digital economy.
Gobind also mentioned there are 73 cybersecurity service providers, subject to confirmation upon the bill’s enactment and commencement of registration and licensing procedures.
