Starting in 2027, primary school pupils will be taught in the fundamentals of artificial intelligence (AI) within the school curriculum, announced Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek.
She revealed that in the coming years, the curriculum will incorporate ‘Fasih Digital’ (digital proficiency) among the seven essential competencies for students, according to NST.
Responding to parliamentary inquiries from Pang Hok Liong (PH-Labis) on 21 March, Fadhlina affirmed the ministry’s dedication to nurturing a skilled workforce proficient in AI, thus positioning Malaysia competitively in the global digital economy.
She emphasised that digitally literate pupils will adeptly apply their knowledge and problem-solving skills, leveraging computational thinking to innovate.
The new curriculum will introduce pupils to AI basics at the primary level within the technology and digital subject. Subsequent exploration and application of AI will continue into secondary school, encompassing subjects such as computer science, information and communications technology, and design and technology.
Fadhlina stressed the ministry’s ongoing commitment to enhancing technology and digital learning systems, ensuring students’ preparedness to navigate future challenges and opportunities presented by advanced technologies like AI.
