The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission’s (MCMC) Cashless Society program, launched in 2023, has achieved 20,035 cashless transactions as of February.
Deputy Communications Minister Teo Nie Ching revealed that 2,740 traders were successfully registered during the same period. The program, initially introduced in Melaka last year, has expanded to Johor, Negeri Sembilan, and Pahang, according to Bernama.
Teo outlined plans for 2024, involving the implementation of Cashless Society in 61 locations across the mentioned states, with collaboration from the Johor government, Felda, and other partners.
Initiatives such as Cashless@NaDi (National Information Dissemination Centre, formerly known as PEDi) in Felda settlements aim to promote awareness of cashless payments, utilising methods like e-wallets, DuitNow, QR codes, and debit/credit cards to boost the local economy.
The focus remains on assisting micro- and small-scale traders, with the Cashless@NaDi program set to be implemented in 17 locations within Felda settlements in Johor.
Teo aims to establish 11 new NaDi before the year-end, with the target of reaching 10,000 cashless transactions by the end of 2024 through collaborative efforts with the state government, MCMC, Felda, financial service providers, and banks.
