Telegram has shown its readiness to collaborate with the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) in streamlining the regulatory aspects of the platform, particularly in addressing issues related to scams and online gambling activities, as stated by Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil.

Fahmi mentioned that Telegram’s founder and CEO, Pavel Durov, communicated this during a face-to-face meeting held to discuss various matters concerning the social media platform, which currently boasts approximately 15 million users in Malaysia, according to Bernama.

Fahmi described his meeting with Durov as constructive, where they not only discussed regulatory concerns regarding the platform but also delved into topics concerning new technologies and artificial intelligence (AI).

“Pavel also expressed interest in holding further discussions on several cooperation opportunities with the Malaysian Government.

“In that regard, I have invited him to visit Malaysia himself to continue discussions with several parties involved,” he said.

Furthermore, Fahmi mentioned that Durov expressed his intention to expand Telegram’s operations into Malaysia.
