Singapore’s Infocomm Media Development Authority (IMDA) and the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) have entered into a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to combat telecommunications scams.
Signed on 25 February at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Spain, the MoU underscores the importance of cross-border collaboration to address the issue of scams, according to The Edge Singapore.
IMDA highlighted that scams transcend borders, necessitating strong cooperation between countries. With Singapore and Malaysia being close neighbours, the MoU reflects their shared commitment to combating scams, as evidenced by previous collaborations on cross-border enforcement actions against scammers.
Given Malaysia’s proximity and cooperation history, it emerges as a crucial partner for Singapore in regional efforts against telecom scams. The MoU, signed by Lew Chuen Hong, CEO of IMDA, and Tan Sri Mohamad Salim bin Fateh Din, Chairman of MCMC, aims to bolster the exchange of strategic intelligence, promoting a coordinated regional approach for the protection of citizens from scams.
Key focus areas include regulatory assistance for scam calls and text messages, support for research and education on these issues, and the facilitation of knowledge exchange through training programs and staff exchanges.
