The national car manufacturer, Perusahaan Otomobil Nasional Sdn Bhd (Proton), suggested that it is gearing up to introduce multiple new models of new energy vehicles (NEVs) in the near future.

Bernama reports that Dr. Li Chunrong, the chief executive officer, revealed, “We will launch (the models) very soon. We will launch one model, maybe in the next six and eight months later, we will launch the second one (which includes other non-NEV models as well).”

He made this announcement during his presentation on Proton’s “Future Plan Product Strategy” at the company’s Chinese New Year Prosperity Dinner yesterday (21 February).

Dr. Li also outlined Proton’s intention to expand its powertrain portfolio by introducing a new-generation engine, aiming to gain a more competitive edge in the market. Additionally, he expressed Proton’s ambition to secure the top ranking in after-sales service.

Highlighting Proton’s recent success, Dr. Li mentioned that in 2023, the company achieved its fifth consecutive year of sales growth, reaching a total of 154,611 units sold (both domestic and export).

This marked a robust 9.3% increase compared to the 141,432 units sold in 2022 and represented Proton’s strongest sales performance since 2012.
