The Melaka government aims to install 350 electric vehicle charging bays (EVCBs) in the state by 2025, aligning with the Town and Country Planning Department’s (PLANMalaysia) guidelines.

Currently, 118 direct current (DC) and alternating current (AC) EVCBs are operational at 40 locations in urban areas across Melaka, as revealed by Chief Minister Datuk Seri Ab Rauf Yusoh, according to Bernama.

He encourages the Melaka Green Technology Corporation (PTHM) to promptly implement its role as the primary driver of green technology development in the state, following the prescribed planning guidelines for all EVCB applications.

Ab Rauf emphasises that initiatives by PTHM and EVPower will boost efforts to promote low-carbon mobility practices in Melaka and nationally. Highlighting the significance of Melaka as a tourist destination, he notes that an increased number of EVCBs will benefit EV users, including those visiting from abroad, such as Singapore.

PTHM’s CEO, Mohd Hafizam Mustaffa, states that the organisation is currently identifying new locations in major towns for EVCB installations.

They plan to collaborate with local authorities and EVCB installation companies to meet the target of having 350 EVCBs in Melaka by 2025.

Also, guidelines are in place for establishing EVCBs due to safety concerns, particularly when dealing with high currents, especially in the case of DC chargers.

Hafizam emphasised the importance of ensuring that visitors to Melaka do not encounter charging difficulties, especially with the anticipated rise in EV users, as there are currently electric vehicles priced below RM100,000.
