A recently released report indicates that the demand for technology talent in Malaysia surpasses the available supply, resulting in heightened competition for skilled professionals.

TMR reports that the 2024 Job Market and Salary Guide for Malaysia by Randstad highlights the anticipation of increased hiring activities throughout the year.

To attract top talent, employers are advised to align with evolving employee expectations and invest in relevant learning and development programs to stay competitive in the market.

Despite apparent challenges faced by the tech industry in 2023, including significant layoffs across various sectors, particularly in non-tech functions like HR, sales, and marketing, the report underscores substantial growth within the tech sector itself.

The broader economy has witnessed an upswing in technology roles as companies from diverse sectors intensify their focus on digital transformation.

The report also points out the significance of the gaming industry in Malaysia, with the University of Wollongong Malaysia launching a bachelor’s degree in game development.

Major game developers, including PlayStation and Bandai Namco, have established studios in Malaysia, attracted by the presence of a growing talent pool. The government has also allocated funds in the 2024 budget, specifically RM30 million, to promote Malaysia as an e-sport development hub.

Private-sector initiatives complement governmental support, with examples such as Xsolla’s Curine Academy in gaming commerce and a partnership between 3Particle Solution Sdn Bhd and Asia Pacific University of Technology & Innovation for talent development programs focused on extended reality (XR), augmented reality (AR), and virtual reality (VR).
