Perodua To Mass Produce EVs By 2025, Says Tengku Zafrul

Perodua is expected to mass-produce electric cars by 2025, according to International Trade and Industry Minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Tengku Abdul Aziz.

He said in a post on Twitter that Perodua is collaborating with an international automotive company to produce a prototype in line with Perodua being appointed to lead the production of affordable EVs under the New Industrial Master Plan 2030 (NIMP2030).

Electric cars to make up 20% of car sales by 2030

Meanwhile, Awani reported that Perodua is looking at electric vehicles (EVs) and hybrids to account for up to 20% of total new car sales by 2030.

The company previously showcased its first electric concept car (EV) at last year’s Malaysia Autoshow, dubbed the Electric Motion Online or EM-O.

Based on reports from Berita Harian, the EM-O is capable of moving at a maximum speed of 160 kilometers per hour (km/h) with a travel distance of between 300 and 350 kilometers.

It’s said that the EV uses a lithium-ion battery that can be charged in 7 hours and 30 minutes. There is also a 300kW ultra-fast charge option which charges up to 80% in 20 minutes but the company’s Chief Executive Officer Datuk Seri Zainal Abidin Ahmad previously mentioned that the specs are only on paper and there is a lot of work to be done before the first real electric car can be introduced.
