Ookla Research, a provider of internet connectivity intelligence, has stated that Malaysia’s “unconventional deployment strategy has proven effective.” The nation achieved the third-highest global ranking for 5G download speed, reaching 485 Mbps in the third quarter of this year (3Q2023).
In 2021, the Malaysian government established Digital Nasional Berhad (DNB) with the mandate to implement a nationwide Single Wholesale Network (SWN) for 5G coverage.
The 5G SWN model was designed to centralise infrastructure deployment, fostering efficient utilisation of resources, cost-effectiveness, and ensuring equitable access to 5G services across both urban and rural areas.
In the “The State of Worldwide Connectivity in 2023” report,
Malaysia’s remarkable achievement in reaching the third spot globally for 5G download speed, with a reported speed of 485.24 Mbps in Q3 2023, is particularly noteworthy. Despite launching its nationwide 5G network less than two years ago, Malaysia’s unconventional deployment strategy has proven effective.

According to Ookla, the United Arab Emirates and South Korea have emerged as frontrunners in 5G performance, showcasing the fastest median 5G download speeds on a global scale. The United Arab Emirates leads with a speed of 592.01 Mbps, while South Korea closely follows with an impressive 507.59 Mbps.
In the top 10 list, there are countries such as Qatar, Brazil, the Dominican Republic, Kuwait, Macau, Singapore and India. Singapore took the ninth spot, reaching more than 300 Mbps.
As of 30 November, 5G network coverage in populated areas of Malaysia has achieved 76.1%, and we are now getting very close to the 80% coverage target. Once that target is hit, Malaysia will switch to the Dual Wholesale Network.
