Perodua aims to have electric and hybrid vehicles represent up to 20% of new car sales by 2030, according to President and CEO Datuk Seri Zainal Abidin Ahmad.
He stressed the importance of collaboration among industry stakeholders to achieve this goal. Perodua has been tasked with leading electric vehicle (EV) development in Malaysia under the new industrial plan, as per Bernama’s news report.
“We need to come up with a new product. We have not finalised the production timing, but the target given by the government — 20% by 2025 or 2030 — will materialise if all the parties cooperate,” he said.
Highlighting the substantial investment required for the overall EV ecosystem, he expressed optimism that other companies would contribute towards meeting the government’s objectives. This includes the ambitious goal of establishing 10,000 charging stations nationwide.
Investment, Trade and Industry Minister Datuk Seri Tengku Zafrul Abdul Aziz previously announced the government’s commitment to building the necessary infrastructure to reach its targets: 20% EVs and hybrids by 2030, 50% by 2040, and 80% by 2050.
In a collaborative effort with Tourism Malaysia, Perodua signed a three-year Memorandum of Collaboration (MoC) spanning from 2024 to 2026 to jointly promote tourism in Malaysia.
Zainal highlighted the potential for Perodua to expand its business model via this collaboration, particularly in vehicle subscription, while receiving real-time feedback from international travellers, thereby enhancing the overall tourist experience and accessibility in Malaysia.
