Deputy Minister of Communications and Digital, Teo Nie Ching, urged the public to actively send their old or broken gadgets to the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) e-waste collection centres for proper recycling or disposal.
Teo stressed that the Ministry of Communications and Digital, in collaboration with MCMC, actively promotes eco-friendly practices via the Kitar program, according to Bernama.
This program aims to collect and recycle old gadgets, striving to reduce the country’s carbon footprint amidst an estimated annual production of 364 million tons of e-waste.
Teo highlighted the importance of not discarding gadgets into regular trash bins, stressing the availability of recycling avenues.
Each piece of e-waste sent to MCMC undergoes handling by specialised contractors. The process ensures the extraction of reusable elements and the appropriate disposal methods, thereby reducing the overall e-waste impact in the country.
Considering that the average person possesses at least two gadgets, such as laptops and mobile phones, Teo anticipates a continuous surge in e-waste generation.
