PDRM has reminded Malaysians to hang up and not answer follow-up questions posed by ‘scammers’ if they do not want to be entangled in fraudulent tactics.

Harian Metro quoted Bukit Aman’s Commercial Crime Investigation Department (JSJK) director, Datuk Seri Ramli Mohamed Yoosuf who said the second and third questions posed by the fraud syndicate could ensnare the victim, further causing the victim to be deceived.

If we answer the call, their first response will ask for confirmation, then there will be second and third questions. Usually, after that question, the victim is already hooked and will follow what the scammer tells them. For example, we receive a call claiming to be from a courier company and claiming that our package has someone else’s ID card and they will ask for confirmation by reading our name and ID card number. When we confirm, the scammer will ask more even if we have denied it, and employ psychological tactics to the victim until the victim is trapped.

He said, if possible, the public should not answer suspicious phone calls because there are various other fraud methods used by fraud syndicates.

The latest, through artificial intelligence (AI) technology. We answer a call, within five seconds, they will be able to imitate our voice using the technology. Next, our voice is used to deceive others, with that technology they can imitate our tone, voice, and style.

According to him, although the police have not received any reports regarding the type of fraud using AI technology, they believe that these activities are taking place.

It is true that we admit that it has happened, but we have not received any police report made by victims. Therefore, the public is reminded to be vigilant in receiving any calls from unknown or suspicious numbers.
