The Ministry of Education (MOE) is actively working on providing high-speed internet coverage to all schools across the nation, particularly in rural areas.
Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek stated that the ministry has already supplied broadband internet access to 10,237 schools through the Interim Internet Service Package, offering speeds ranging from 30 Mbps to 300 Mbps, according to a news report by Sinar Daily.
Among these schools, 4,957 have received fibre optic connections, 4,681 have been equipped with wireless 4G broadband, and 599 have established connectivity through satellite links.
Fadhlina said that internet access within schools is mainly concentrated in computer labs, teacher rooms, and administrative offices. However, a transformative initiative called the Integrated MoE Internet Network (MoE.Net) is in the pipeline and it is set to provide high-speed internet to all classrooms within schools.
This network will prioritise fibre technology, ensuring speeds of at least 100 Mbps and up to 1,500 Mbps. The speed will be adjusted based on the size and population of each educational institution.
Fadhlina further emphasised that MoE.Net will bolster the internal network infrastructure, enabling seamless internet access from every corner of MOE-affiliated premises.
The ministry is also introducing an advanced Pedagogy and Learning (PdP) approach through a hybrid classroom pilot involving 110 selected educational institutions and 550 classrooms.
The goal is to seamlessly blend digital and face-to-face teaching methods, enabling cross-class and cross-school collaboration, even internationally. Experts from various fields will contribute to improving the educational experience.
Alongside this initiative, classrooms will receive upgraded wiring and digital tools such as Smartboards and smart TVs. The local network infrastructure will also be enhanced to ensure internet access.
This move is expected to strengthen digital education capacity and enhance the quality of teaching and learning.
