Yesterday, Fahmi Fadzil, the Communications and Digital Minister announced that the government is introducing a new postpaid plan called the “Pakej 5G Rahmah” (5G Rahmah Package) and “Insentif Postpaid Rahmah Penjawat Awam” (Civil Servant Postpaid Rahmah Incentive).
In the announcement, Fahmi didn’t say which telcos would be offering this plan and incentive. But today, five telcos came out and issued a joint statement supporting this initiative.
According to the statement provided to the media, five telecom service providers, namely CelcomDigi Berhad (CelcomDigi), Maxis Berhad (Maxis), TM (Unifi Mobile), U Mobile Sdn Bhd (U Mobile), and YTL Communications Sdn Bhd (Yes), are supporting the government’s recent announcement of Pakej 5G RAHMAH and Insentif Postpaid RAHMAH Penjawat Awam during the Bulan Kebangsaan festivities.
The statement stated that these telcos are dedicated to endorsing the government’s Ekonomi MADANI framework by offering accessible connectivity and devices. They will also maintain close collaboration within the industry to minimise the digital divide.
The 5G plan comes with 60GB of 5G data for RM60 per month and it comes with a 5G smartphone for as low as RM240 and this plan is open to all Malaysians.
While the civil servants will be getting a RM10 rebate per month for any postpaid plans that they are subscribing to for 12 months.
The launch of Pakej 5G RAHMAH and Insentif Postpaid RAHMAH Penjawat Awam is scheduled for 31 August 2023.
It’s interesting to note that, out of the five telcos, Maxis remains the only one that has yet to offer any 5G services to the public.
Does this mean that Maxis will be officially launching its 5G services at the end of this month? We will be keeping our eyes and ears open for that.
