The Transport Minister Anthony Loke announced that the online payment system for the Motor Vehicle Licence (LKM) and Malaysian Driving Licence (LMM) will be unveiled within the next few months after the completion of the Proof of Concept (POC) implementation, according to Bernama.
This approach aims to ensure a seamless launch of the system within the MyJPJ application, mitigating the risk of system crashes due to high user traffic.
Loke also highlighted the recent launch of the digital display modes for LKM and LMM on 10 February and he added that this innovation is anticipated to alleviate congestion at the Road Transport Department (RTD) counters.
Loke further clarified that considering the transitional period for public adaptation, vehicle owners can still opt for a physical version of their licence and road tax.
Addressing a recent viral video depicting two Malaysians being issued traffic summonses in Thailand for not possessing a physical copy of their driving licences, Loke affirmed that the situation is governed by the laws of the respective country.
He emphasised that the digital licence holds validity exclusively within Malaysia and that the ministry lacks jurisdiction over the enforcement of foreign laws.
He clarified that the issuance of physical driving licenses has not been halted. Thus, for those who intend to drive in countries where physical licenses are mandatory, they have the option to apply for them at RTD counters during the license renewal process.
