Two weeks ago, the Prime Minister Dato’s Seri Anwar Ibrahim announced that the government would purchase 40 units of Starlink internet devices for universities, colleges, and schools nationwide, after meeting with Elon Musk, the CEO of SpaceX, the aerospace company that owns and operates Starlink.
Anwar informed Fahmi Fadzil, the Communications and Digital Minister, immediately after the meeting to proceed with the purchase of the devices and install them in universities requiring connectivity.
Yesterday, Fahmi announced on Twitter that the first Starlink unit in Malaysia was set up in UiTM Kuala Pilah.
Fahmi said that the Starlink is used as a “proof of concept” to assist students in obtaining better internet while waiting for a larger allocation for the installation of campus WiFi access points.
He also added that the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) found out about the existence of several “blind spots” around the UiTM Kuala Pilah campus for outdoor coverage, in-building coverage, and WiFi access points, and that UiTM Kuala Pilah is among the 10 UiTM campuses facing serious interconnectivity issues.
You don’t have to be a student at UiTM to use Starlink because the company has already started offering its services to the public as well.
