A couple of days ago, SoyaCincau asked Communications and Digital Minister Fahmi Fadzil for an update as to when Malaysians can expect more affordable broadband services.
This is following the implementation of the Mandatory Standard on Access Pricing (MSAP) as, since making the announcement on 1 March 2023, the government has remained silent on the matter.
However, after over four months of waiting, they finally provided Malaysians with an answer.
In response to a report by SoyaCincau, the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) announced that cheaper broadband services will be available to Malaysians after September.
According to MCMC, they are currently finalising access agreements with retail broadband service providers, and only after that can prices be reviewed. Most service providers have already published or are in the process of publishing a reference access offer (RAO), which is necessary to initiate negotiations for access agreements.
MCMC expects the negotiations to be concluded by the end of September. The regulatory body also mentioned that the reduction in broadband service prices can be expected following the conclusion of the negotiations.
Additionally, apart from standardising broadband access prices, the government has launched an affordable internet package called “Pakej Perpaduan” specifically aimed at youths, those in the B40 group, as well as residents in People’s Housing Projects and public housing projects, among others.
