While Malaysia is focusing on 5G, let’s not forget that there are still many people relying on 4G connections every day. Currently, Malaysia’s 4G network has a coverage of 97% of populated areas.
Bernama reports that Communications and Digital Minister Fahmi Fadzil revealed that the first-quarter results show that 99.87% of populated areas in Selangor now have 4G mobile broadband coverage, offering speeds of up to 55.96 Mbps. He further informed that the National Digital Network Plan’s (JENDELA) phase one has made significant progress, with plans to complete 17 new telecommunication towers by the year-end.
Out of the 17 towers, 11 have already been completed, but eight of them are not yet operational. Fahmi expressed his intention to personally inspect one of these towers and urged for immediate activation plans if necessary, emphasising the need for expediting the process.
Regarding the network upgrade, he stated that 8,457 transmitter stations have already been upgraded to 4G, leaving only 19 stations in the implementation stage.
Fahmi also stressed the importance of promoting the prepaid and broadband unity packages introduced by the ministry early this year. He planned to hold discussions with telecommunication service providers to encourage their efforts in raising awareness about these packages for the public’s benefit.
In addition, he mentioned the completion of 28 fibreoptic Point of Presence (PoP) facilities, ready for subscription by at least 2,912 premises, which will contribute to expanding the broadband infrastructure network coverage. For Selangor, a total of 226 PoP initiatives are planned, with 52 PoP already in the first phase and 174 more scheduled for implementation in the second phase.
