In February this year, we reported that users will have to start paying an additional fee if they are sharing their accounts with other users who do not live under the same roof as them. Back then, this extra member fee only applied to a few countries, but now it’s finally here.

Today, the Netflix has revealed that it’s now in the process of sending emails to its subscribers who engage in sharing their accounts with individuals outside their households.

The option to add an additional member is exclusively available to Standard and Premium plan subscribers. The Standard plan allows for one extra member, while the Premium plan allows for up to two extra members. Each additional member will incur an extra monthly charge of RM13, which will be billed to the account owner.

The extra member will have the ability to transfer their profile, including viewing history and other account information, to their own separate account with a unique password. However, extra members will be limited to streaming Netflix content on only one device at a time and download titles on only one phone or tablet at a time. They will also be subject to the features and restrictions of the primary account.

The primary account holder can change or remove the extra member slot as desired, with a maximum of two changes allowed per billing cycle. To register an extra member under your account, the individual must be located in the same country as you and you cannot be accessing the service through Netflix-included packages or third-party billed accounts.

Although the company doesn’t explicitly state the consequences of not opting into the extra member feature, it’s reasonable to assume that individuals who don’t choose to be extra members will eventually lose access to the primary account. If they don’t opt in and pay the additional fee, their ability to stream content and enjoy the account’s features and benefits may be restricted or revoked.
