Social media platforms have become hubs for scams, pornography, and the illegal drug trade. Scammers exploit vulnerabilities to deceive users, while explicit content and the sale of illicit drugs pose risks to individuals and society. Stricter regulations are necessary to address these issues, safeguard user safety, and combat these harmful activities on social media.
Bernama reports that the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) is intensifying its collaboration with Meta to address Facebook activities that violate Malaysian laws, according to Fahmi Fadzil, the Minister of Communications and Digital.
In a recent meeting between the commission and the giant social media company, they discussed implementing controls on Facebook related to online gambling, as well as advertisements promoting fraudulent investments and scams.
Fahmi emphasised that the responsibility to resolve these issues lies with Meta, and during the meeting, they sought further explanations regarding the online gambling and scam problems. These specific issues are currently the main focus of their efforts.
The Minister expressed his hope that the cooperation between MCMC and Meta will continue to strengthen as they work together to prevent any misuse of the platform.
Additionally, Fahmi stated that they are examining ways to take firm action against Telegram users who engage in uploading pornography and using the app to sell drugs and unapproved medications, which is a violation of the country’s laws.
The government has previously urged Telegram to address these concerns, but the platform has so far refused to do so. Consequently, Fahmi requested that MCMC study appropriate actions to address these issues.
