Bluetooth trackers such as Apple’s AirTag are a blessing for individuals who are prone to losing their possessions. However, these devices can also be used for nefarious purposes, such as placing a tracker in someone’s bag and covertly monitoring their movements. To tackle this issue, Apple and Google have joined forces to develop a solution.

Yesterday, Apple announced that together with Google, they presented an industry standard proposal aimed at preventing the improper use of Bluetooth location-tracking devices for unwanted tracking.

This pioneering specification will make it possible for Bluetooth location-tracking devices to work with unauthorised tracking detection and alerts on both iOS and Android platforms.

Major companies including Samsung, Tile, Chipolo, eufy Security, and Pebblebee have endorsed the proposed standard, which outlines the recommended procedures and guidelines for manufacturers who wish to incorporate these features into their products.

The suggested standard includes a range of guidelines for the manufacturers of Bluetooth tracking devices, which are designed to discourage the “misuse” of location trackers that could potentially endanger users by exposing them to stalking, harassment, and theft.

According to the specification, the unauthorised tracking detection feature should be capable of “identifying and notifying individuals” when a tracker that has been separated from its owner is in close proximity to them, and should also offer guidance on locating and deactivating the device.

By the end of 2023, Apple and Google plan to roll out a practical application of the specification for unwanted tracking alerts, which will subsequently be incorporated into upcoming versions of iOS and Android.
