Scammers frequently use phony links in text messages as a ploy to deceive innocent people into divulging sensitive information. These links can seem genuine but actually redirect users to fake websites that aim to purloin personal data or infect their devices with malicious software. As a result, the government has resolved to prohibit the inclusion of URL links in SMS messages.

The Star reports that Starting from 2 May 2023, several telecommunications companies including Maxis, CelcomDigi, and U-Mobile will begin blocking the transmission of URLs through SMS.

This measure is intended to prevent individuals from falling prey to online scams and will include the prohibition of SMS messages requesting personal information such as names, identity card numbers, bank account details, and contact information.

The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has directed all service providers to implement this measure, but it’s not currently mandatory. Maxis has already released an announcement regarding this measure, indicating that the block will be rolled out in stages and will initially cover person-to-person SMS with URLs.

However, SMS messages containing URLs sent by businesses using short codes such as 6XXXX, 2XXXX, and 1XXXX will be addressed later. The telecommunications companies will still allow the transmission of URLs via social messaging apps like WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger, and WeChat.

The decision to block URLs in SMS was made in response to several online scams that have tricked people into clicking on fraudulent links, and it aims to prevent similar incidents from happening in the future.
