The grow and rise of artificial intelligences (AI) such as ChatGPT, Midjourney, Stable Diffusion, and many others are very beneficial when they are used properly. But it also poses significant risks if not properly regulated. Regulations can help ensure that AI is developed and used in a responsible and ethical manner that aligns with human values, safety, and privacy.

Without regulations, AI systems may cause harm, perpetuate biases and discrimination, infringe on individual rights, and undermine trust in the technology.

Reuters reports that the Biden administration announced that it’s inviting comments from the public regarding accountability measures for AI. The impact of AI on national security and education is causing concern, with ChatGPT, a popular AI program attracting attention from U.S. lawmakers due to its growing user base.

The National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA) which provides advice to the White House on telecommunications and information policy, is interested in obtaining input on an AI accountability mechanism, which could ensure that AI systems are lawful, ethical, effective, safe, and trustworthy.

The agency aims to publish a report as it evaluates measures to ensure AI systems’ integrity and will inform the Biden Administration’s work on risks and opportunities related to AI.

The President has emphasised the responsibility of tech companies to ensure product safety. The California-based OpenAI, backed by Microsoft, makes ChatGPT, which some users praise for its quick responses but others criticise for inaccuracies.

A tech ethics group, the Center for Artificial Intelligence and Digital Policy, has requested the U.S. Federal Trade Commission to stop OpenAI from issuing new commercial releases of GPT-4, citing bias, deception, and a risk to privacy and public safety.
