Many of us have likely experienced situations when attempting to install a new app, only to be met with a warning that our phone’s storage space is inadequate and that we must manually uninstall some apps. This can be a bothersome process, which is why Google has developed a solution to automatically free up space for you.
Yesterday, Google announced a new feature called “Auto-archive” that will reduce unnecessary uninstalls and help users to install new apps. This feature is only available for Android devices.
The search engine giant said that the Auto-archive feature enables individuals to clear up space on their device without needing to entirely remove an app. Once a user chooses to participate, apps that are seldom utilised will be partially removed from the device to conserve space, but the app icon and the user’s individual app data will be preserved.
When the user wants to utilise the app again, they may easily re-download it by tapping on it, and they can continue where they left off (if the app is still accessible on Google Play).
However, the availability of Auto-archive is restricted to developers who employ the App Bundle to release their apps.
Here’s how you can use the Auto-archive feature
Users can opt into auto-archive in a few steps.
- The user tries to install a new app when the device is out of storage.
- A pop-up window appears asking if the user wants to enable auto-archive.
- If the user opts in, unused apps on the user’s device will be auto-archived to free up enough space for a new app request.
