The PlayStation VR2 (PS VR2) was launched back in 22 February 2023 and it’s a virtual reality (VR) headset for the PS5. In Malaysia, the PS VR2 is priced at RM2,799, which is more expensive than the disc PS5 console, which priced at RM2,499. Perhaps this is the main reason why it isn’t selling so well.
According to Bloomberg, estimates from research firm IDC suggest that Sony is expected to sell fewer than 300,000 units of the PS VR2 headset during the first few weeks of its release. Sony had set a target of producing 2 million units for the headset’s launch window.
Consumers around the world are facing rising costs of living, rising interest rates and rising layoffs. VR headsets are not top of mind for most consumers under the current economic climate.
IDC, Francisco Jeronimo, vice president of data and analytics.
The PS VR2 headset is a critical component of Sony’s plan to create a metaverse where users can engage in activities beyond gaming. Sony’s CEO Kenichiro Yoshida has emphasized the metaverse as a growth area for the company.
Although Sony’s in-house game studios have developed VR-specific games to support the headset’s launch, the expected strong start has not materialized.
Nevertheless, Sony’s CFO Hiroki Totoki expressed optimism about surpassing the 5 million sales of the original PS VR headset over the course of the PS VR2’s market life.
Jeronimo said Sony needs to cut the price of PS VR2 if they want sell more it and avoid being a complete disaster.
Bloomberg also reports that Sony is planning to cut PS VR2 production numbers, but Sony told GamesIndustry.biz that this is not true and they are “seeing enthusiasm from PlayStation fans for the upcoming launch, which includes more than 30 titles such as Gran Turismo 7, Horizon Call of the Mountain, and Resident Evil Village.”
