Last month, we reported that that the Minister of Communications and Digital, Fahmi Fadzil, said that the government would make a decision soon about whether to proceed with DNB 5G rollout model, the single wholesale network (SWN) and hopes they can reach a conclusion before the end of March. But March is already coming to an end and it seems we are not getting the answer this month because the government has yet to make a decision.

According to New Straits Times, the government’s actions to dismantle monopolies in Malaysia has led to increased scrutiny of Digital Nasional Bhd (DNB), the organization responsible for developing the country’s 5G infrastructure.

Many experts have criticized DNB for being a monopoly. However, Fahmi said the government has not yet made a decision about DNB’s role, and is considering multiple factors before doing so. He added that he hope they will be able to announce a decision soon.

Despite this, attempts to involve telecom companies in the process have faced several challenges. In 2021, Ericsson Malaysia was chosen by DNB to design and construct the national 5G network at a reduced cost. The government has pledged to thoroughly assess the 5G rollout in Malaysia, following allegations that the previous administration mishandled it.

The government has also requested all ministries to examine existing monopolies to promote transparent economic growth and fair competition. Huawei, a Chinese telecommunications firm, is reportedly seeking to challenge Ericsson in constructing Malaysia’s 5G network.
