Social media sites are wild places, even rules and regulations doesn’t stop people from posting offensive and indecent content there. There’s absolutely no way the companies can stop all of them, but the government is trying their best.
The Vibes reports that during a session of the Dewan Rakyat, the Deputy Communications and Digital Minister, Teo Nie Ching announced that the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) had received 1,282 complaints from 2022 to February this year, regarding pornographic content posted through “dark side” Twitter accounts, and these complaints have been referred to the police for further action.
Teo was responding to concerns raised by members of parliament about the increasing number of “dark side” accounts on Twitter, which are used by people to express sexual desires, post explicit content, and promote illegal Telegram channels and groups. The Vibes said this issue has been under police attention since 2020.
Teo stated that the MCMC has taken action on all the complaints and reported 222 Twitter accounts that uploaded lewd content to the platform, resulting in their permanent removal. Any additional action required will be the responsibility of the police.
