To ensure social and political stability, safeguard intellectual property, and prevent the spread of harmful or inappropriate content, governments and organisations frequently monitor the internet. This was evident during the GE15 period on TikTok, where measures were taken to prevent the dissemination of such content.

Malay Mail reports that according to Communications and Digital minister Fahmi Fadzil, individuals are permitted to produce and share content on social media channels as long as it doesn’t offend the sensitivities related to race, religion, and royalty (the 3Rs).

The ministry will collaborate with social media providers to supervise such content to guarantee that it adheres to these limits. In terms of public safety, the government will take prompt action in response to any disturbances or issues that arise due to the spread of extremist ideologies, terrorism, or deviant teachings.

While freedom of speech is permitted in Malaysia, individuals must adhere to laws, manners, and culture and refrain from spreading slanderous or false information.

The ministry does not generally request social media providers to remove content unless it violates community guidelines or touches on the 3Rs, and such content creators may have their accounts closed if they persist in violating the rules.

Nearly 95% of content that is removed is due to the content creator violating community guidelines (set by the platform provider). If this happens repeatedly, the platform itself will close the account.
