When OpenAI, a U.S-based artificial intelligence (AI) research laboratory released ChatGPT (Generative Pre-trained Transformer) on 30 November 2022, it took the world by storm.

Students are using it to help them with their homework. The chatbot is even capable of writing graduate-level business and law exams. It even passed the exam but barely. Even Malaysia’s teachers and lecturers are concerned about ChatGPT and its ability to help students “cheat” in their assignments.

Rumour has it that Microsoft even invested USD10 billion (RM42.4 billion) into OpenAI, the creator of ChatGPT and the titan software and hardware company is integrating the chatbot into Teams and Azure, Microsoft’s cloud computing platform.

With its immense popularity and user base, OpenAI introduced a subscription for the chatbot dubbed ChatGPT Plus yesterday. The plan will costs USD20 (RM84.90) per month and users will receive a number of benefits such as:

  • General access to ChatGPT, even during peak times
  • Faster response times
  • Priority access to new features and improvements

For now, the subscription is only available for people living in the United States. OpenAI said they plan to expand access and support to additional countries and regions soon.

If you are worry about losing access to ChatGPT, don’t be. OpenAI said it will remain free for all to use.

We love our free users and will continue to offer free access to ChatGPT. By offering this subscription pricing, we will be able to help support free access availability to as many people as possible.

Even though it’s not available here, you can still sign up for a waitlist. OpenAI didn’t say when they will launch ChatGPT Plus and how many users can sign up for the subscription.
