Shopee’s Parent Company Is Creating More Than 2,000 Jobs In Malaysia With New Investment In Tech Industry

The Singaporean company is planning to set up of cloud services, data hosting and processing, and a new logistics e-commerce warehouse.

Sea Limited (also known as Sea Ltd or SE) is a tech conglomerate headquartered in Singapore. It was founded in 2009 by Forrest Li and initially established as Garena. Sea Ltd operates platforms for online, mobile entertainment, and communication for users. The company also provides digital financial services such as e-commerce, digital payments, and digital advertising services.

Sea is also the parent company to Shopee and they are planning to expand their investments in Malaysia and generate more than 2,000 employment opportunities here.

The Edge Markets reports that the Ministry of International Trade and Industry (MITI) stated that during a visit to Sea Ltd’s headquarters in Singapore on Sunday, 29 January, the company shared its plans to expand in Malaysia with MITI Minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz. The plans include establishing cloud services, data hosting and processing, and a new e-commerce logistics warehouse.

Sea Ltd’s cloud computing project will be located in a three-story green facility in Kulai, Johor, with 24 data hall suites, mechanical and electrical rooms, office space, as well as storage and parking facilities, targeted to be completed by the first quarter of 2024.

Furthermore, Shopee plans to expand its presence in Malaysia with the construction of a new two-story, 1.4 million square-foot, hi-tech logistics park with cloud infrastructure in Bukit Raja, Klang.

Tengku Zafrul stated that the FDI in cloud computing and high-tech warehousing is expected to create over 2,000 new jobs and improve the country’s human capital, productivity, and competitiveness.

The expansion is also expected to have positive impacts on small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs), corporates, and local communities, through local sourcing, vendor development, and the strengthening of the digital industrial ecosystem.

Sea Ltd’s co-founder and COO, Gang Ye, said that the expansion plan is a significant step not only for the company but also for the local digital ecosystem.
