Waze is a popular navigation app because it helps drivers get to their destination by the fastest possible route at the moment. It also offers features such as avoiding traffic and road hazards, which can save time and money.
The reason why many motorists prefer Waze over everything else is the ability to see users’ reports on traffic jams, speed traps, roadblocks, etc. But this also makes it difficult for authorities to catch motorists who commit traffic offences.
Malay Mail reports that Kuala Lumpur police are urging the public not to post information about police checkpoints and roadblocks on the Waze app, as it could impede their efforts to enforce traffic laws and catch drunk drivers.
KL police chief Datuk Azmi Abu Kassim emphasized the importance of being aware of the risks posed by reckless drivers and urged the public to support law enforcement efforts.
Azmi said:
Those who have never been affected by the misfortune caused by the carelessness and negligence of traffic offenders, will not be able to feel the pain and suffering victims’ families have to endure.
And that is why it is my hope that the public, especially road users, will cooperate with the police instead of trying to help those who commit road offences.
We don’t think Waze will remove the police alerts feature, which is a crucial part of the app, or they will risk losing many users who rely on the app daily for work and leisure.
