When you buy a new Android device, the only way for you to transfer your chat history from your old Android device is by backing it up to Google Drive and restoring it on your new device. With this new feature, you might not have to do that anymore.
According to WABetaInfo, the giant instant-messaging platform is working on a feature that enable users to move the chat history to a new Android device dubbed “Chat Transfer”.
With this new feature, users can bypass backing up history to Google Drive and restoring it on a new Android device. WhatsApp may require specific permissions in order to transfer the chat history to the other device.
For now, we don’t know what kind of permissions. Perhaps you need to scan a QR code on the new device or enter some code. This feature is currently still under development, so there’s no release date. Also, there’s a possibility WhatsApp might not release this feature at all.
You can already transfer your chat history from an iPhone to an Android device and vice versa. If you are someone who regularly changes devices, this feature could be very useful for you.
This new feature is only available for Android devices. Maybe WhatsApp will work on an iPhone to iPhone chat history transfer in the future.
