When Apple introduced iPhone 14 models back in September 2022, they also announced a new feature known as the “Emergency SOS”, which is a satellite-based communication that allow iPhone 14 users to text emergency services when they are out of cellular and WiFi coverage.
Besides Apple, HUAWEI also introduced the same feature for its Mate 50 Series phones, but it will only work in China. Now Qualcomm is also bringing this feature to future Android smartphones.
The major semiconductors and wireless telecommunication products company announced today at CES 2023 the “World’s First Satellite-Based Solution Capable of Supporting Two-Way Messaging” also known as the Snapdragon Satellite.
Qualcomm has teamed up with Iridium, which runs a network of 66 Low Earth Orbit satellites, to make this feature possible.
The company said this feature can support two-way messaging for emergency use, SMS texting, and other messaging applications. Also, it’s not just for emergencies, you can use it for “recreation in remote, rural and offshore locations.”
In addition, Qualcomm said Snapdragon Satellite will be available on next-generation smartphones running Snapdragon 8 Gen 2, to be launched in select regions starting in the second half of 2023.
Other devices including laptops, tablets, vehicles, and IoT devices can also use Snapdragon Satellite. OEMs and app developers can use satellite connectivity to offer unique branded services. As soon as they become available, 5G Non-Terrestrial Networks (NTN) will be supported by Snapdragon Satellite.
