Malaysia is now entering the fifth-generation mobile network era with the majority of telcos in the country now providing 5G services and many users starting to use 5G-capable phones. Eventhough the coverage is still patchy, we are making good progress, and in a few years, we might be able to use 5G everywhere in Malaysia.

According to the Malay Mail, Digital Nasional Berhad (DNB) states that the rollout of the 5G network is ahead of schedule and that it will have reached more than 40% of coverage of populated areas (COPA) throughout Malaysia by December 2022.

Although COPA was originally expected to reach 37.9% for this year, the most recent projection indicates that it would reach 41.8% by the end of this month.

The demand for 5G services and support for obtaining the necessary approvals from the various state and local council authorities to speed up network deployment have given DNB Chief Operating Officer, Nasution Mohamed, confidence that the company will reach the committed COPA of 80% within the next 18 months.

In the locations where the network has been constructed, 14 million people will be able to use 5G, and over 30 million people will be able to enjoy 5G as well over the course of the next two years, according to DNB.

In contrast to the initial intended 4,018 sites, Nasution estimates that 3,500 sites will be sufficient to meet the 40% COPA. Supply chain problems earlier this year and delays in obtaining the required local council permissions, particularly in Selangor and Sarawak, are to blame for the decreased number of sites. But these issues have mostly been resolved and the network rollout will proceed according to plan.

Almost all of Kuala Lumpur, Putrajaya, Selangor, large portions of Penang, Johor, and Negeri Sembilan, as well as some areas of Melaka, Perak, Kelantan, Sabah, and Sarawak, are currently covered by the network.

However, the new administration is planning to review DNB’s 5G plans because they said it was not carried out in a transparent manner. Hopefully, this won’t cause the network rollout to be delayed.
