Major social media platforms are feeling threatened by TikTok these days. Just very recently, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) of the United States, something like Malaysia’s MCMC, is asking Apple and Google to remove the app from their app stores, citing “unacceptable national security risk”. Now Facebook is trying to do something to compete with the short-form videos platform giant.

According to a news report by Malay Mail, the news feed on Facebook’s app has been divided in half, a big move that matches the user interface on its toughest rival, the enormously successful TikTok.

The user’s connections are presented chronologically in one of the feeds, while algorithm-driven recommendations on anything else that might be of interest to them are provided in the other.

The suggestions feature makes Facebook more akin to TikTok’s “For You” feed, where the algorithm of the popular video app seeks to identify what users like to see and presents it to them.

These modifications occur as Facebook owner Meta, which competes with TikTok for social media supremacy, seeks to retain as many users as possible as part of its multi-billion dollar ad-driven business.

According to the social media platform, Facebook apps will launch to a customised news feed dubbed “Home,” where artificial intelligence will present postings from friends as well as suggested material.

This system takes into account thousands of signals to help cut through the clutter and rank content in the order we think you will find most valuable.

However, users can tap on the “Feeds” button for a more traditional Facebook-like experience where they can simply view postings from their connections in reverse chronological order.

According to Meta, the “Home” page that greets users is intended to be a place for fresh content and suggestions, while the “Feeds” area is reserved for posts by individuals or groups with whom they have established ties.

On the Facebook platform, the company disclosed early this year its first global decline in daily users, sending a troubling message about its future.

Additionally, Meta is attempting to reorient itself in the wake of a number of problems, including charges made by a whistleblower that the firm prioritised profits over user security.
